Part Stuck

Post  Godsey on Sun Oct 23, 2011 10:37 am

I just bought a used diesel engine. It has no identifying marks except 1.5 cc. The piston move up and down but it cannot turn completely over. The part that moves inside the engine to adjust the compression is stuck. I have taken heat to it and tried to force it and it had apparently moved but I screwed in the wing nut and now it really is stuck. The nut is not physically attached to the part. It comes off and doesn't actually pull the part up, it just pushes it down. What should I do to free the part. The engine also looks very similar to the paw 09 found here http://www.eifflaender.com/enginepics.html I just found out it is an SR.

I got the part to move but it does not retract. I imagine it will if its running.

Yes, it should go up when you fire the engine up.

But you will need to take care that the piston is not hitting the contra-piston, otherwise you will possibly damage something inside. Perhaps bend the conrod. or break the crank pin off. The compression adjustment screw should never be wound down so as to cause a problem.

If need be unscrew the cylinder from the crankcase, insert a length of lead or something soft and tap it up as a last resort. Soak it in WD40 first.

A good easy to make mix for general purpose running is 1/3 Kerosene, 1/3 Castor oil, 1/3 Ether.

Well the thing that moves inside the engine is calls the contra-piston
What I recommend is getting some soft wood dowel that fits the cylinder rather snugly and then tapping it rather gently with a hammer then once you heve it at the top soak the engine in some fuel.
The. When it's fry give it a little run to see if it goes alright.
Hope this helped,
Indra.

Ok. I got the engine running but when I go to full throttle it starts to die. I increased the compression and it started to hold it then it just stopped running. The engine was still capable of turning over so the piston didn't hit anything. The engine is still capable of running but we didn't keep the compression that high because we were worried about messing it up. It also doesnt want to idle well. It gets kinda poppy and acts like it is missing out or flooding. I am using a fuel with equal parts kerosene, castor, and a little extra ether.

I ran the engine for awhile and when it was sufficiently warmed up it held full throttle. When it was allowed to cool it would start to spit and sputter at full but kept running. I had to stop turning the nut though because it was making my fingers get too close to the prop.

Hi maybe you might add some ignition imorver to your fuel (about 2% iso-propyl nitrate is good)
That helps with, heat, lower compression setting and idle.

I don't know it is sometimes used as a recreational drug (a stimulant)
Sometimes called poppers.
But if you have trouble getting it you cam use amsoil cetane booster instead.

It's a matter of personal preference I like iso but amsoul is good as well and you can get it from most places that sell starter fluid or online.
